We have collected answers to the questions people ask most often when choosing and buying a used forklift truck.
What is a forklift truck and what is it used for?
A forklift truck (also called a lift truck or fork truck) is warehouse equipment for lifting, moving and stacking palletised loads. It is used in warehouses, factories, logistics centres, retail and construction. A forklift speeds up loading and unloading and reduces the physical strain on staff.
How much does a used forklift cost?
The price depends on the brand, year of manufacture, operating hours, engine type, lifting capacity, lifting height and attachments. Used equipment from Europe usually costs 2–3 times less than a new machine with a similar specification. You can get an exact price for a specific model from our managers: contact Booster Lift.
Which forklift should I choose: electric, diesel or gas?
An electric forklift suits indoor use and food warehouses: it produces no emissions and runs quietly. Diesel is the choice for intensive work on open yards and uneven ground. Gas (LPG) is the all-rounder: it can be used both indoors and outdoors. Choose based on operating conditions, the number of shifts and the environmental requirements at your site.
Which used forklift brands are the most reliable?
Well-known European brands have a strong reputation on the market. We offer Still, Linde, Jungheinrich forklifts. Service and spare parts are easy to find for these makes across Europe, and the machines hold their resale value.
How do I inspect a used forklift before buying?
Check the operating hours and the service records; the condition of the mast, chains and carriage; the hydraulic system for leaks; the forks and tyres; the engine or traction battery; and the brakes and steering. Before shipment we check the hydraulics, the engine and the main components. We also recommend asking for the service history if the machine was maintained by dealers.
How many operating hours is normal for a used forklift?
Service life depends on the model and working conditions, but modern machines can typically run for tens of thousands of hours with regular maintenance. So it is more important to compare not only the hour meter but also the service history and the condition of the mast, hydraulics and power unit. A well-maintained forklift with more hours is often more reliable than a younger one that was never serviced.
What lifting capacity do I need?
Choose a capacity with a small margin over the heaviest pallet you plan to lift. We offer models rated from 1.5 to 5 tonnes. Keep in mind that the real capacity drops as lifting height increases and when attachments are used, so check the load chart of the specific machine together with its mast.
What is the difference between Duplex and Triplex masts, and what is free lift?
Duplex is a two-stage mast, Triplex is a three-stage mast. When lowered, a Triplex mast is shorter, which makes it suitable for premises with limited height and for tall racking. Free lift means the forks rise without the mast increasing its overall height. This is essential for working inside trailers and containers.
What does Side Shift do and what attachments are available?
Side Shift moves the carriage sideways so you can position the load precisely without manoeuvring the whole truck. It saves time and reduces the risk of damaging goods and racking. Besides that, forklifts can be fitted with fork positioners, rotators, clamps and other attachments, depending on the type of load.
Is a used forklift a better choice than a new one?
In many cases, yes. A used truck is much cheaper, available from stock (new machines often have delivery times of several months) and pays back faster. Equipment built to European market specification has its original configuration and was usually serviced by authorised dealers. Booster Lift offers checked used forklifts from Germany and Slovakia.
How long does the battery of an electric forklift last?
The service life of a traction battery depends on its type (lead-acid or lithium-ion), the charging routine and how intensively the truck is used. As a rough guide, lead-acid batteries last several years with proper care. To extend battery life, avoid deep discharge, use a suitable charger and top up the electrolyte on time where required.
How often does a forklift need servicing?
The schedule depends on the model, but servicing is usually carried out after a set number of operating hours (often every 500 hours) or once a year, whichever comes first. Servicing includes changing oils and filters and checking the hydraulics, brakes, mast chains and battery. Regular servicing extends the machine's life and reduces the risk of downtime.
Do I need training or a licence to operate a forklift in the EU?
Under EU workplace-safety rules (Directive 2009/104/EC), employers must make sure that workers using work equipment such as forklifts have received adequate training. Most countries require documented operator training or authorisation. The exact requirements are set by national law, so check the rules in the country where the truck will be used.
How do I order a forklift, and will you help me choose?
Just describe your task: the type of load, pallet weight, lifting height, working conditions and budget. Booster Lift managers will select options from stock or to order and explain delivery times and terms. You can request a consultation on the contacts page.
